A Changing Shepherd, an Unchanging Christ, an Unfinished Mission

Rev Ezekiel Femengwi · Sunday, 13 September 2026

A Changing Shepherd, an Unchanging Christ, an Unfinished Mission Scripture: Acts 20:17–38 Theme: Pastoral Transitions Pastoral seasons change, shepherds come and go, but Jesus Christ remains the unchanging Head and Chief Shepherd of His Church. In this message, Pastor Ezekiel reflects on the transition taking place at Bambi Baptist Church and uses Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20 as a biblical framework for understanding pastoral transitions. The message emphasizes that a pastoral transition is more than simply changing pastors. It is a spiritual, emotional, and relational process of moving from what was, through the uncertainty of what is, toward what will be—while keeping Christ at the center. Key Themes Pastoral ministry is a stewardship for a season. A pastor does not own the church, its people, its ministry, or its vision. These belong to Christ and are entrusted to pastors for a season. Change is not the same as transition. A change can happen externally while people remain emotionally and spiritually attached to what was. Genuine transition requires letting go, navigating the neutral zone, and embracing a new beginning. Christ is the permanent Shepherd of the Church. Pastors are under-shepherds. They should be honored, loved, respected, and prayed for, but they must never occupy the place that belongs exclusively to Christ. The church must avoid personality-centered ministry. No pastor is indispensable. The church does not ultimately depend on the continued presence of one individual because Christ is the One who sustains and builds His Church. The mission continues. A pastoral transition is not the end of the church's mission. Christ continues building His Church and leading it into its next season. Five Truths About Pastoral Transition The sermon begins developing five biblical truths, including: Pastoral ministry is a stewardship for a season. The church has one permanent Shepherd. The message calls the congregation to place its trust not in a changing shepherd, personalities, resources, or individual preferences, but in Jesus Christ, the unchanging Shepherd. The central question for the next season is therefore not: “What will happen to the church without our pastor?” but: “What does Christ want to do with the church in its next season?” As the church enters this transition, the call is to trust Christ, listen to Him, keep Him at the center, and faithfully continue the unfinished mission He has entrusted to His Church. Key Scripture: “And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace...” — Acts 20:32 Main Idea: A changing shepherd does not mean an uncertain church, because the Shepherd of the Church does not change.
