Part 1 - TONGUES: What Does the Bible Really Teach

Rev Ezekiel Femengwi · Sunday, 11 October 2026

TONGUES: What Does the Bible Really Teach? (Part 1) What does the Bible really teach about the gift of tongues? Is speaking in tongues the evidence that someone has received the Holy Spirit? Are all spiritual manifestations genuinely from God? And what does Paul mean when he refers to "tongues of angels" in 1 Corinthians 13:1? In this message, we begin a careful biblical examination of the gift of tongues, moving beyond personal experiences, assumptions, traditions, and popular interpretations to discover what Scripture actually teaches. Drawing primarily from 1 Corinthians 12:1–11, this teaching establishes a fundamental principle for understanding spiritual gifts: We do not determine the work of the Holy Spirit by our experiences; we discern it through the Word of God. In this message, we explore three important questions: Who has the authority to define the work of the Holy Spirit? What were biblical tongues? Does the expression "tongues of angels" mean what many assume it means today? Key biblical truths The authority of Scripture: Every spiritual experience and manifestation must be examined in the light of God's Word. The sovereignty of the Holy Spirit: The Spirit distributes spiritual gifts individually as He wills, not according to human expectations (1 Corinthians 12:11). The purpose of spiritual gifts: Spiritual gifts are given for the common good and the edification of the body of Christ. The glory of Christ: Genuine manifestations of the Holy Spirit direct attention to Jesus Christ and bring glory to Him. The biblical understanding of tongues: The events at Pentecost (Acts 2:1–21) provide an important foundation for understanding the gift of tongues. Scripture references 1 Corinthians 12:1–11 1 Corinthians 13:1 Acts 2:1–21 2 Timothy 3:16–17 Acts 17:11 1 John 4:1 1 Thessalonians 5:19–22 John 16:13–14 Daniel 4 A call to biblical discernment This teaching is not an invitation to mock spiritual experiences, dismiss the work of the Holy Spirit, or approach the subject with prejudice. Neither is it a call to accept every spiritual manifestation without examination. Rather, it is an invitation to approach God's Word with humility, examine our convictions, and allow Scripture to determine what we believe and practise. Spiritual maturity is not demonstrated by how quickly we accept a spiritual claim, but by how faithfully we examine it against God's Word. When experience meets Scripture, experience must be tested by Scripture, for Scripture remains the final authority. Watch, listen, open your Bible, and join us in this important inquiry. If this teaching is helpful to you, consider sharing it with others who would benefit from this biblical examination. #Tongues #HolySpirit #SpiritualGifts #BiblicalTeaching #BiblicalDiscernment #SoundDoctrine #ChristianFaith
